Blood test (phlebotomy) or finger prick test (at home)
This is a blood test which measures the level of Vitamin D in the blood. Vitamin D is usually checked together with other key nutrients at our clinic.
Blood draws can be requested at a number of different locations across Ireland including Dublin, Galway, Cork, Waterford, Mullingar and Newbridge. This test can also be arranged as an at-home test with a finger prick test kit.
This test measures:
- Vitamin D (25-hydroxy Vitamin D, 25(OH)D)
Lailah had taken vitamin D supplements on and off to maintain her immune health. She had developed a longer term autoimmune condition and wanted to test her levels of vitamin D to ensure her supplement levels were sufficient.
At her first test, her vitamin D levels were low. Lailah commenced 2,000 IU Vit D per day and re-tested within 3 months. Surprisingly, her levels were still very low and she needed to take a higher dose. She commenced on 10,000 IU per day and repeated the test within 6 weeks to ensure her levels didn’t go too high.
She stayed on a maintenance dose of 5,000IU after this but continued to re-test once or twice per year.
Key findings:
- Supplementing with 2000IU was not sufficient in this patient to rectify a deficiency
- 10,000IU restored optimal levels but may be too high for ongoing dose
