Advanced Thyroid Test

Learn More about our Advanced Thyroid Test

This is a blood test to assess the whole picture of thyroid health. It is important to measure thyroid antibodies along with thyroid hormone output, as the protocol to address autoimmune thyroid issues is different. Antibodies may be reduced by nutrition and supplements to reduce ongoing damage to the thyroid gland. In the absence of antibodies, restoring critical nutrients required for thyroid hormone production is the priority. See our Thyroid Nutrient Profile for testing essential nutrients.

This test can be arranged as an at-home test with a finger prick test kit. Phlebotomy can be also carried out at our Dublin clinic or locations around the country. Please enquire with our team. Phlebotomy carries an additional charge.

This test includes:

  • Free triiodothyronine (fT3)
  • Free thyroxine (fT4)
  • TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone)
  • Antibodies - Thyroid peroxidase (TPO-Ab) and Thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-AB)
  • Optional: reverse T3 (rT3) – phlebotomy option olny

Goes well with:

  • Thyroid Nutrient Profile

Juliette had a history of subclinical hypothyroidism, with fatigue, weight gain and poor quality hair and nails. She wanted to address these symptoms and importantly, she was trying to avoid having to take medication in the future. Her thyroid function was in the normal range, though her TSH levels were above the optimal range. Her Anti-TPO antibodies were very high and she also had raised Anti-Tg. This can be damaging to the thyroid gland and studies show that people will likely end up on medication within two years.

Juliette started on a dietary and supplement protocol to reduce thyroid antibodies and support her thyroid function. Within 3 months, she was feeling much better and her TSH was optimal and her thyroid antibodies were reducing.

Key Findings:

  • Above optimal TSH
  • Very high anti-TPO antibodies and anti-Tg thyroid antibodies
  • Reduction of antibodies after three months on nutritional protocol and TSH in the optimal range

Advanced Thyroid FAQ

How can this test help me with my thyroid health?
This blood test evaluates your thyroid hormone levels (fT4, fT3, TSH) as well as thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-Tg) to give a complete picture of thyroid function and immune activity. Even subtle imbalances can affect energy, mood, weight, digestion, sleep, and metabolism. By identifying hormonal or autoimmune contributions, we can develop a personalised plan that may include lifestyle strategies, nutrient support, or referral to appropriate medical care. Only the functional medicine approach however aims to tackle reduction in thyroid antibodies, there is no conventional medicine strategy for this. If you experience fatigue, weight changes, or mood fluctuations, this test can help uncover underlying thyroid or immune-related factors.
I’ve already had my bloods done with my GP, how is this different?
Standard GP tests often focus only on TSH, and sometimes fT4. Many do not routinely check fT3, which reflects the active hormone your body actually uses, or thyroid antibodies, which indicate autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s. This panel provides a more complete and functional picture of thyroid health and early autoimmune activity, allowing for targeted, personalised intervention before overt dysfunction develops. It can also be used to track progress of your functional medicine protocol e.g. reducing thyroid antibodies as these cannot be measured repeatedly with the health service.
Can this test help with fertility?
Yes. Thyroid hormones and autoimmune activity are critical for reproductive health, ovulation, and healthy pregnancy. Even mild thyroid dysfunction or positive antibodies can contribute to irregular cycles, miscarriage risk, or subfertility. By assessing both hormone levels and antibodies, we can identify potential issues and create a personalised plan to support thyroid health, fertility optimisation, and pregnancy outcomes.
I’m taking medication for my thyroid; can I still do the test?
Yes. You can still have this panel done while taking thyroid medication, but it’s important to interpret results in the context of your current treatment. Thyroid hormones like fT4, fT3, and TSH can be influenced by medication dosage, and antibodies (anti-TPO, anti-Tg) remain measurable regardless of therapy. Testing while on medication can still help us: • Monitor trends in antibody levels • Identify any residual functional imbalances We may provide guidance on timing or preparation to ensure the most accurate interpretation of your results.
