Stool sample (at home)

Inflammatory markers such as beta-defensin, sIgA and calprotectin are excellent indicator of possible triggers for immune imbalance anywhere in the body.

Zonulin is a marker of leaky gut. Zonulin is a protein released from between the cells when the protective gut barrier breaks down, or ‘leaky gut’ occurs, and can be detected in the stool.

This panel also includes markers of digestion such as pancreatic elastase and bile acids. These provide information on root causes of digestive and immune issues.

These tests are included in the full GI Ecologix panel, so this is most often used as a repeat or stand alone measurement if high zonulin or inflammation has been previously detected. It can also be used to monitor progress in IBD such as Chron’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis.

This test measures:

  • Beta-defensin
  • sIgA
  • Calprotectin - inflammatory marker*
  • Zonulin - leaky gut marker
  • FIT test – detects blood in the stool as a marker of inflammation or cancer*
  • Pancreatic elastase – marker of digestive capacity
  • Bile acids – marker of fat digestion and gut health

*Highly elevated results require referral to your doctor

Works well with:

  • GI Ecologix
  • Food Intolerance – Food Map IgG

Gary had Ulcerative Colitis and had previously undergone surgery and extensive treatment. He was now managing very well with diet and on no medication. He wanted to monitor his microbiome and digestive health and undertook a GI Ecologix test. His initial test showed some dysbiosis and inflammation, and a slightly raised level of zonulin.

Gary carried out a personalised and targeted protocol to further improve this. On repeat test at 6 months, his zonulin was undetectable and all inflammatory markers had improved.

Gary continued to support his gut health via diet and supplement and a healthy lifestyle and was very happy to continue without further medication.

Key Findings:

  • Slightly raised level of zonulin, though this is often much higher in active Ulcerative Colitis
  • Raised levels of inflammatory markers sIgA and calprotectin, though again often much higher in active disease
  • On repeat test, 6 months later, his zonulin was almost undetectable and inflammatory makers were all much improved which was an excellent outcome
