Blood test (phlebotomy)
The is a blood test which assesses the levels of homocysteine in the blood, which is an independent markers of cardiovascular health. Maintaining a healthy level of homocysteine is important in the management of many chronic long term conditions.
We require certain nutrients in order to process homocysteine effectively, including folate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B6 amongst others. For this reason, elevated homocysteine can be a reflection of how well the folate cycle is progressing. The folate cycle is also required to synthesise new DNA, a process essential for new cell growth, many aspects of general health and reproductive health.
This test measures:
- Homocysteine
Works well with:
- Bioactive B Vitamins

Lorna has a family history of Alzheimer’s disease and carries a strong genetic risk factor for the disease. She wanted to test for any modifiable dietary factors that may increase this risk for her. Amongst other important nutrients, Lorna had her homocysteine measured. Elevated homocysteine can be a risk factor for development of cognitive decline or dementia.
She was pleased that her homocysteine was in normal range and has carried out this test annually to ensure it stays in range.
