Trying to conceive
When you are trying to start a family, taking time to focus on your health can improve your chances of a successful pregnancy.
The health of both partners is equally important at this time. Preparing for a pregnancy three months in advance is the optimal amount of time to improve sperm quality and egg quality. Any amount of preparation though will help to improve the health of the pregnancy and baby.
Key Facts
- Much research has shown that a nutritious diet can improve your chances of a successful pregnancy and healthy baby
- Certain supplements such as folate are recommended for all but there are also specific supplements that may be important for you depending on your own diet and requirements
- Testing for deficiencies that can be rectified ahead of pregnancy can help during the increased nutritional demands of carrying a baby
- Optimal thyroid function ahead of pregnancy is very important as low thyroid hormone results in a high risk for first trimester miscarriage
- The gut microbiome in both parents in addition to the vaginal and semen microbiomes, can play an important role in the immune system of the baby

Patient Story
History
Susan and James attended our clinic in preparation for pregnancy. Susan was 35 and James was 46 so they knew that age might be a factor. They wanted to optimise their nutrition as much as possible to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
Tests
Both Susan and James undertook the Functional Nutritional Profile blood test to assess their levels of key nutrients for male and female fertilty. James was overweight and had a busy stressful lifestyle. Both Susan and James were recommended to have regular basic blood tests, including thyroid tests and tests for heart health and blood sugars.
Plan
Susan and James wanted to make changes to their lifestyle and begin to build healthier eating habits, prioritising home cooked meals and quality time together. A personalised meal plan was designed with them including new recipes and tips.
James was found to be deficient in a number of key nutrients including zinc and antioxidants. A supplement protocol was designed to rectify any deficiencies identified on the blood tests.
Re-test
James carried out a repeat blood test on the key nutrients that were deficient, to ensure normal levels had been restored.
Outcome
James and Susan conceived 6 months later and Susan continued to attend the clinic in relation to pregnancy health and nutrition.
