• One woman’s experience at our clinic

  "I had been having irregular periods since I was eighteen years old. I had been to countless doctors, allergy clinics, gynaecologists and specialists in a desperate effort to rectify the situation. I was tested for everything under the sun, but there was no definitive answer and everyone remained perplexed as they advised me to simply slow down a bit".   A boy (aged 12) had a problem with excessive, smelly wind since age of six. This lead to bullying in school. As he was about to start secondary school, both the boy and mother were concerned about further bullying. He has always suffered from constipation. His GP was unable to help and suggested he would grow out of it. In infancy, the client had constant ear infections, grommets at age 2, and regular antibiotics. He also suffered mild asthma when aged between 8 and 9. Currently he suffered from headaches 2 – 3 times per month, bleeding gums and very dry skin. This boy was constantly hungry and craved bread. His diet was high in sugar, refined carbohydrates and salty and sugary snacks. He also chewed through 2 packs of gum a day. A new eating plan was devised and agreed with him, with realistic suggestions for decreasing snack foods and replacing with healthier options. After much discussion, he also agreed to cut out chewing gum for 2 weeks and replace fizzy drinks with sparkling water. Some family meal recipes were provided and it was suggested that client get involved in meal preparation. A short term course of 3 supplements was also recommended to address potential nutrient deficiencies, including probiotics to help balance the good gut bacteria. Two weeks later, his mother reported that the wind had completely resolved within 3 days of starting supplements. By 2 weeks, there was a daily bowel movement. Only limited dietary changes had been made so far but he had stopped chewing gum completely. The nutritionist reiterated that dietary changes were best way to remove problem in the long term and that if these were not made, that wind problem would most likely come back.

• Second pregnancy success

  Marie was at week 18 of her second pregnancy when she came to Positive Nutrition. She had suffered a very uncomfortable first pregnancy with nausea for the pregnancy duration, together with heartburn,constipation and haemorrhoids. This time she wanted to try everything she could to avoid feeling so bad, not least with a demanding 4 year old to manage too. While the nausea and vomiting were not as bad as during her previous pregnancy, she was constipated, with heavy, strained bowel movements . She had some heartburn, and was concerned that this might become more severe as she entered the third trimester. She felt exhausted, craving her bed more than anything else and was giving in to cravings for cups of tea, chocolate and other sweet foods. Following a detailed analysis of her diet, a new eating plan was agreed. She was to try eliminating caffeine in the tea and chocolate, avoid products made from refined grains, white flour and sugar and combine protein with whole grains and fresh fruit or vegetables with every meal. Changing her eating habits too was recommended, to have smaller meals several times a day. She was also encouraged to drink more water, and increase exercise as anything that improves the circulation, like walking or swimming, will improve digestion and fatigue. It was suggested she change to a better quality of supplements suitable for pregnancy, plus omega 3 fish oils to support blood pressure and circulation, and to take a short course of probiotics to restore gut balance for relief of the constipation. Within a month, Marie reported that her bowel movements were back to normal and there was no more straining. She had loads more energy and was no longer craving sweet foods. Replacing tea with non-caffeinated varieties had been hard at first, but now she found herself enjoying them. By 30 weeks, she’d rarely had heartburn, and realized that when she did was when meals had been rushed. She went on to have a natural birth of another healthy son.
