Let’s get Pregnant

It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 4 couples in Ireland now experience problems getting pregnant.  About 40% of these problems are attributed to female issues and almost 30% to male issues.  For the remaining 30% of couples no definite cause can be found, which can be particularly frustrating as your doctor may be unable to suggest any treatment.

Cause of Infertility % cases
Ovulatory failure including  PCOS 20%
Tubal damage 15%
Endometriosis 5%
Male problems 26%
Unexplained 30%

What are my options?

Medical advances have given us many wonderful options for assisted conception and this route is essential for some couples.  However it’s an expensive option and success is by no means guaranteed. For example, IVF success rates are between 25-30% in Ireland.

Many experts believe that assisted conception should be tried only when other all options have been considered, and to maximise success, should always be used in conjunction with a healthy nutrition and lifestyle programme.

The natural approach to fertility is extremely successful.  A study conducted by the University of Surrey showed that couples with a history of infertility who made changes in their lifestyle and diet together with nutritional supplements had an 80% success rate.  Nutrition has also been shown to be helpful in treating recurrent miscarriage and problems with conceiving a second child.

How nutrition can help

Your body uses the nutrients from food and supplements to repair cells, produce hormones, and produce healthy eggs and sperm. It takes approximately 3 months for eggs to ripen and for new sperm to mature.  It can also take up to 3 months to boost levels of fertility-enhancing nutrients in your blood stream.

Research by European doctors suggests that a three month programme of healthy eating and lifestyle will maximise your chances of conception and we recommend that our clients follow our fertility programme for at least 3 months before trying to conceive again.

Dr Marilyn Glenville PhD has been successfully helping couples to overcome their fertility problems for many years and now for the first time her fertility-enhancing programmes are available in Ireland with Positive Nutrition.  Her programmes include nutritional and lifestyle advice and additional supplementation and testing where appropriate.

Optimise your chances

If  you and your partner are having problems conceiving or staying pregnant, doing everything you can to boost your fertility is important and could well make the difference between you being able to have a healthy baby or not.

Our aim is to find out what is preventing you from getting or staying pregnant. If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than 12 months (or more than 6 months if you are over 35) you should follow up with your doctor to rule out any medical issues in addition to implementing a healthy nutrition and lifestyle programme.  While it is often the woman who takes these initial steps, it takes two to make a baby and it is very important that both the man and woman are tested appropriately.
